Publishing Education for Indie Authors

Foundational knowledge for building books that work — structurally and professionally.

Publishing education isn’t about memorizing rules — it’s about understanding how the parts of a book fit together.

This page focuses on the foundational knowledge behind professional book production: terminology, book structure, file expectations, and what belongs where. These resources are designed to help indie authors make informed decisions before formatting, design, or upload — whether you’re DIYing or working with a professional.

The Indie Author Pre-Publication Checklist

Before you format, design, or upload anything, make sure the foundation is in place.

Publishing mistakes usually don’t happen during upload — they happen before production even starts. Missing files, unclear structure, and skipped steps can lead to delays, rework, and unnecessary stress.

This Pre-Publication Checklist walks you through the core elements every professionally produced book should have in place before formatting, cover design, or distribution decisions are made. It’s designed to help you spot gaps early and move forward with confidence — whether you’re publishing your first book or managing a growing catalog.

The checklist helps you confirm:

  • Your manuscript is truly production-ready

  • All front and back matter elements are accounted for

  • File and format expectations are clear

  • You’re making decisions in the correct order

Publishing Terminology: The Structural Basics

Understanding industry language helps you avoid production mistakes and communicate clearly with editors, designers, and distributors.

Trim Size

The final height and width of your book. Common trim sizes are 6×9 or 5.5×8.5 inches for paperbacks.

Bleed

Design or images that run to the edge of the page. Essential for full-page graphics or color.

Gutter

The inner margin where your book is bound. It affects how close content can sit near the spine.

Front Matter

Everything before the story starts: title page, copyright, dedication.

Back Matter

Everything after the final chapter: acknowledgments, about the author, teasers.

KDP vs. IngramSpark

Two major self-publishing platforms. KDP is best for Amazon, IngramSpark excels in wide distribution.

Common Publishing Questions (Answered Clearly)

Publishing comes with a lot of moving parts, changing platforms, and conflicting advice. Here are answers to some of the most common questions I get from clients—whether they’re hitting “publish” for the first time or the fifteenth.

What file types do I need to publish on Amazon KDP?

For print, you’ll need a PDF interior (at least PDF/X-1a:2001 spec) and a PDF full-wrap cover. For ebooks, KDP accepts EPUB and reflowable Word files, but professionally formatted EPUBs are preferred for cleaner results.

How long does it take to format a book?

A simple print+ebook conversion can take 2–5 business days, depending on complexity. If your manuscript needs cleanup or has lots of images, charts, or callouts, it may take longer. You’ll get a realistic timeline after a file review.

Do I need a different ISBN for each format?

Yes. Each edition—printebookaudiobookhardcover, even large print—requires a unique ISBN. If you’re publishing wide (not just on Amazon), owning your ISBNs gives you more control.

Why does cover design impact sales?

Because readers absolutely judge books by their covers. A professionally designed cover signals genre, quality, and tone at a glance—and influences whether readers click for more info. Think of it as your book’s billboard.

What’s the difference between formatting and design?

Formatting is making your book file technically clean and readable.
Book design goes further—using typography, white space, flow, and structure to make your book look and feel professionally published.

Do I really need professional formatting if I’m using Vellum or Word?

Tools like VellumAtticus, and Word can create passable files—but passable isn’t professional. If you care about interior aesthetics, reader experience, file size or print file compatibility across platforms, it’s worth investing in custom formatting and design. Software creates output. A designer creates impact.

If you don’t see your question here, don’t stress.

Want to Go Deeper?

Publishing Foundations

Publishing Foundations is where you learn how professional publishing actually works—before you make costly decisions or lock yourself into the wrong path.

This section focuses on core concepts every author needs early: production readiness, common pitfalls, decision-making frameworks, and how each stage of publishing affects the next. The goal isn’t speed or hacks—it’s understanding the structure behind the process.

Each article is designed to stand alone while also preparing you for the deeper, more specialized topics covered in the In-Depth Publishing Education series.

New articles publish each Wednesday.

In-Depth Publishing Education

In-Depth Publishing Education expands on the foundations with deeper explanations, real-world examples, and focused mini-series on specific publishing topics.

This section is where concepts are unpacked in detail—editing types, book structure, series planning, platforms, metadata, and long-term publishing strategy. Content is added intentionally, with each series building on the same structural framework rather than chasing trends or quick tips.

If you already understand the basics and want clarity, context, and smarter decision-making, this is where you go next.

New articles publish each Friday.
