My Rating

This was the second book in Nora Roberts, D.C.  Detectives series. It was a romantic thriller that had many of the same characters as the first book.  However, as opposed to Sacred Sins (Book 1) this story, while a good read, felt rushed.

In the Book 1 we were introduced to detectives Ben Paris and Ed Jackson and saw Ben enter into a relationship with Dr. Tess Court while searching for the serial killer dubbed “The Priest”.

This story deals with his partner, Detective Ed Jackson, a health food eating throwback  to simpler times. He’s not a bad guy, he’s just a protector without being a mysognist.  Ed during book 1 bought a house and in the interim between book 1 and 2 has been fixing the house up. One of his neighbors is Kathleen.

Kathleen is a school teacher, going through a divorce whose sister, Grace McCabe is a bestselling mystery novelist. Grace comes to D.C. to reconnect with Kathleen. Within days of reuniting, Kathleen gets killed  and Grace is the one who finds her after coming back to the house from her first date with Ed.

Grace is determined to help the police find her sisters killer. She initially thinks its got to be a hit set up by Kathleen’s ex-husband, but soon comes to the conclusion that it has to do with her sister’s side job as a phone sex operator when other women are killed who work for the same service.

The character action and dialogue was spot on, but I expect nothing less from Nora Roberts. She is the best at romantic suspense and thrillers.

We get glimpses of the killer without knowing who he is throughout the story, but this one kept me guessing. Of course with DC you know politicians will have some starring or guest starring role.

I recommend this book if you need a quick read that while engrossing is not all encompassing.

Recommend?

I recommend this book to anyone to those who like heat with their crime procedurals. If you read Sacred  Sins, this book is a must-read follow up.

Deena Rae

Deena Rae was born and raised in Texas - home of bluebonnets, boots, beef and big hair - into a family that was in the printing and publishing industries. Her father was a computer programmer for major newspapers when the equipment took up whole rooms and mother has been a publisher for almost 40 years - trying, unsuccessfully, to bring her into the family business. Finally relenting in 2011, she officially joined The Book Connection - her mother's publishing and packaging company - as the Digital Director, to create the epublishing division. Her computer skills, willingness to help authors, love of literature, no-nonsense attitude and quick wit has helped shepherd many authors through the maze of digital and indie publishing. Quickly deciding she wanted to offer her services to more authors than just the ones her mother represented, she branched out on her own, opening E-BookBuilders January of 2012. The rest is history.
